Critical Care Float Registered Nurse
Location: Worcester, Massachusetts

Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Float between all adult ICUs and step-down units (excluding post cardiac surgery, balloon pump, Impella, transplant, or EVD patients).
- Critical care float position requiring flexibility and comfort working across multiple adult ICU settings.
- Night shift: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM).
- Every other weekend and holiday rotation; all call outs must be made up by the end of the assignment.
- Orientation includes two pass/fail exams (medication and telemetry); only one attempt allowed per exam. Failure to pass results in immediate contract cancellation. Study materials provided.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Massachusetts.
- Minimum 3 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year.
- Float experience across multiple adult ICU settings.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid government-issued ID.
- Background check: 7-year criminal history within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, county searches, national criminal search, and education verification. Annual updates required for direct hires.
- Massachusetts statewide iCORI clearance within 30 days prior to start.
- Education verification of highest completed degree (transcript acceptable if electronic verification unavailable).
- Drug test within 30 days of start covering a comprehensive panel of substances.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start, including physician statement of fitness to work without restrictions.
- Immunizations or valid declinations required for:
- COVID-19 (most recent vaccine or facility-specific declination)
- Flu seasonal vaccine or declination (required during flu season)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (declinations not accepted for Pediatrics, NICU, Maternity)
- MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella (declinations not accepted for Pediatrics, NICU, Maternity)
- TB testing: Two PPDs (one within 90 days, one within a year) or QuantiFERON/T-Spot within 90 days; positive TB requires chest X-ray and facility-specific questionnaire.
- Skills checklist and employment application documenting 7 years of employment history with explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Two professional references within three years of start date.
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Medication exam/pharmacology competency exam required on first day of orientation.
- Telemetry exam required for RNs working in telemetry-monitored units; not required for OR, Psychiatry, Mother-Baby/Postpartum, or NICU.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 6 months of start and annually thereafter for direct hire RNs working in acute care, critical care, endoscopy/cath lab, PACU, and emergency departments. Failure to pass the onsite EKG exam results in immediate cancellation.
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification or completion of equivalent on-site training module may be required.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be comfortable floating across multiple adult ICU units.
- Only one attempt allowed to pass required orientation exams; failure results in contract cancellation.
- Study materials and compliance support provided prior to orientation.
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with strong critical care skills and flexibility to work across various adult ICU settings on night shifts.
