ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Boone, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work primarily in the ICU with floating to Intermediate Medical Care Unit (IMCU) and Medical-Surgical units as needed based on patient volume.
  • Patient ratio in ICU typically 1:2, may vary when floating.
  • Must be comfortable caring for pediatric patients occasionally, though they are not common.
  • Required to work 2 weekends per month.
  • Uniform: All white or all navy scrubs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification
  • Experience and comfort with ventilator (vent) management
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
  • Must be willing and able to float between units

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID) required for address verification; candidates residing within 40 miles of the facility are not eligible.
  • Background check: 7-year criminal history check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually.
  • E-Verify or attestation proof required.
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license.
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and competency exams.
  • Passport-style photo for badge (shoulders up, front-facing, neutral background, high resolution).
  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands, updated annually.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Immunizations or titers required (must be current within 5 years or have approved medical/religious exemption):
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella (Zoster/Shringrix vaccine not accepted)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually during flu season (October 1 – April 30).
  • 10-panel drug screen including marijuana within 90 days of start, updated annually.

Additional Notes

  • Must include all required documentation such as cover sheets and reports as specified by the client.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training (CPI) is required for ICU nurses, with a one-year grace period to obtain if not already certified.
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete self-study orientation and post-tests, accountability statements, and personal data sheets, especially if there is any break in contract.

This position requires a highly skilled ICU RN comfortable with critical care, floating to other units, and meeting rigorous compliance and credentialing standards.
