Registered Nurse (RN) – Float Pool / Bed Management
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Schedule: Every other weekend and 2 of the next 3 holidays
Job Overview
- Float to multiple medical-surgical (MS) and cardiac telemetry/stepdown units, as well as overflow areas such as the Emergency Department (ED) and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Care for a variety of patients including post-cardiac cath, orthopedic/joint, observation, general surgical/medical, stroke/neuro, oncology, ICU/medical/surgical/observation, and infusion patients.
- Manage high patient turnover with frequent admissions and discharges, especially in observation and COVID units.
- Work in a fast-paced, highly organized environment.
Patient Care & Unit Details
Units and bed counts with typical nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 2SE (Cardiac Telemetry): 24 beds, 1:4 ratio
- 3SE (Ortho/Joint): 22 beds, 1:4-5 ratio
- 4SE (Observation/COVID): 24 beds, 1:5 ratio
- 4NW (General Surgical/Medical): 29 beds, 1:5 ratio
- 4NE (Stroke/Neuro): 21 beds, 1:5 ratio
- 7E (Oncology/Medical): 18 beds, 1:5 ratio
- 1NW (ICU/Medical/Surgical/Observation): 14 beds, acuity adaptable, approx. 1:5 ratio
Responsibilities include medication administration, patient assessment and monitoring, IV starts, dressing changes, central line care, Foley catheter care, and titration of intravenous cardiac medications.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Dakota or a compact state.
- Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Minimum 2 years of strong medical-surgical nursing experience.
- At least 1 year of recent telemetry experience.
- Cardiac experience including IV starts, dressing changes, and central line care.
- Experience managing patient ratios around 1.4 patients per nurse.
- Ability and willingness to float to all assigned units and overflow areas.
Orientation & Training
- Orientation includes 2-3 twelve-hour shifts with a preceptor.
- Classroom training provided for the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Technology & Equipment
- Use of EPIC EMR system.
- Acu-dose system for narcotic dispensing and medication scanning.
Additional Information
- Must badge in and out at the facility.
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs only.
- Local candidates with permanent addresses within 80 miles are not accepted.
- Must disclose if previously employed at this facility; prior employment requires a minimum 6-month gap before reapplying.
- The position requires strong organizational skills to manage a very fast-paced environment.
