Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - MedSurg 5 South (Hem/Onc)

Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Unit: 5 South Hematology Oncology
  • Beds: 32
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, up to 1:6; adjusted down for higher acuity patients
  • Common Patient Diagnoses: Hematology/Oncology, chemotherapy patients
  • Telemetry: All patients monitored; central monitor stations communicate with RNs

Required Qualifications

  • License: Registered Nurse (RN) license required
  • Certifications: BLS required; ACLS required for charge RNs
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 1 year of experience in level 1 trauma or higher acuity med/surg settings
    • Experience at a larger facility with high surgery volume preferred
    • Comfort with lines, chest tubes, and hematology/oncology care preferred
    • Chemotherapy experience preferred but not required (training provided)
  • Skills: Ability to titrate heparin drips; familiarity with cardiac drips a plus
  • Other Requirements:
    • EPIC charting proficiency required
    • Flu vaccine required (medical exemptions allowed with documentation)
    • Fingerprint background check required (remote process takes 10 days)

Work Schedule & Environment

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling possible; travelers expected to fill schedule gaps
  • Weekend Requirement: Typically every other weekend or 2 weekends per month
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotates with regular staff
  • Floating: Staff float between all med/surg units within skillset; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff
  • Dress Code: Solid color professional scrubs (any color)

Orientation & Training

  • First day includes paperwork, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), and unit tour
  • Two additional 12-hour shifts with preceptor for orientation

Additional Notes

  • Charge nurses take light patient assignments and may take full load if needed
  • Respiratory therapy support available for CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow oxygen
  • No call or standby requirements
