Pediatric Acute RN Position - Peoria, Illinois
Unit Overview
- Department: Pediatric Acute (shares unit with Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)
- Beds: 22 beds for Pediatric Acute, 10 beds for Pediatric Hem/Onc; ability to expand/swing beds based on census
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
- Patient Types: Medical/surgical pediatric patients including hyperbilirubinemia, neurological conditions, diabetes, failure to thrive, cystic fibrosis, COVID, orthopedic cases
Certifications & Requirements
- Required Certifications: BLS (AHA), PALS (AHA)
- Licensing: Active Illinois nursing license or proof that application process has started
- Drug Screening: Must pass a negative drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
- Orientation: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation (may be extended with approval)
- Additional Submission Requirements: Last 4 digits of SSN, middle initial, requested time off
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, charge nurse takes patient assignments
- Pediatric Crisis RN: Available 24/7
- Administrative Supervisor: Support available 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): Ratio approximately 1:8-10
- Pediatrician Coverage: Hospitalist in-house until ~midnight; 24/7 resident coverage
- Monitor Techs: Pediatric monitor tech monitors patients remotely; RNs do not read their own strips
Equipment & Responsibilities
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: Heated high flow and BiPAP with specific parameters; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage settings
- Tele/Monitor Equipment: Monitored patients cared for; monitor tech oversees telemetry
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (0700-1930 or 1900-0730)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (day shift weekends are Sat/Sun; night shift weekends are Fri/Sat)
- Holiday Requirement: Holidays required unless otherwise approved during interview
- Call/Standby: Not mandatory currently
- Floating: RNs may float within the children's hospital to other pediatric units or mom/baby units (no ICU or chemo patients unless experienced)
- Scrub Code: Any pediatric-appropriate scrub top color or pattern allowed; tops must not be revealing; solid color scrub pants required; layering with long sleeves or jackets allowed
Contract Details
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Orientation Hours: 12 non-billable hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or payback required
This position is suitable for pediatric acute care nurses with required certifications and Illinois licensure, comfortable with 12-hour shifts and working in a collaborative pediatric unit environment.
