ER Nurse Travel Contract - Bakersfield, California

Job Overview

  • Position: Experienced ER Nurse for a travel contract
  • Location: Bakersfield, CA
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Unit: Emergency Department (ED) - 18 beds (Fast track staffed with midlevels & LVNs)
  • Patient Volume: 85 - 115 patients per day (average ~100)
  • Patient Population: Includes correctional patients (CDCR), homeless, and indigent populations; fewer pediatric patients; no cardiac patients (stabilized and transferred out); all OB patients transferred to another campus

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 full years of ER nursing experience
  • Active California nursing license
  • Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS

Work Environment & Support

  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:4 generally; 1:2 for ICU patients
  • EMR system: Cerner
  • Charge Nurse: Shift manager and resource nurse available
  • Nurse Aides: ED Techs (EMT or aides from other units)
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) available 24/7
  • Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell system
  • Hospitalist or Intensivist MDs present in the ER (no other MDs used)
  • IV Team: Not available
  • Telemetry: Phillips system
  • Ventilators: Yes

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
  • Day Shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM; 9:00 AM - 9:30 PM
  • Mid Shifts: Various start times between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, ending 10:30 PM to 3:30 AM
  • Night Shifts: 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling with manager final approval; 4-week schedules; block scheduling not guaranteed
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (Fri/Sat nights; Sat/Sun days)
  • Holidays: 1 major and 1 minor holiday per schedule
  • Floating: Possible between two facilities 6.5 miles apart; 2-hour notice if floated prior to shift; midshift floating possible

Orientation & Training

  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts at primary campus, 1 shift at secondary campus

Dress Code

  • Scrubs: Navy blue required
  • Scrub jackets: Navy blue only
  • Undershirts under scrubs: Navy, white, or black only

Additional Notes

  • This position must be the nurse’s primary job; no secondary work schedules allowed
  • Strong teamwork orientation required
