NICU Travel Nurse Opportunity - Stockton, California

Position Overview

  • Specialty: NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Level 3

  • Employment Type: Travel contract

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of NICU nursing experience
  • Active California nursing license
  • Required Certifications: BLS (AHA), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), PALS
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Job Responsibilities & Environment

  • Patient Population: Neonates from 22 weeks gestation to term; high volume of sepsis, respiratory cases, preemies, drug withdrawal, and syphilis babies
  • No neonatal surgeries or ECMO cases
  • Nurses will float minimally to Pediatrics and Postpartum units; must be comfortable with couplet care in Postpartum
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 in NICU; Pediatrics ratio 1:4
  • Shifts: 7 AM and 7 PM; no block scheduling allowed
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend, with possibility of additional weekends
  • Holidays: Required to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Call: No transport call required for travelers

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong IV skills required; IV team support available
  • Experience with Cerner EMR system is mandatory
  • Familiarity with HUGS security system and Breast Milk Bridge scanning add-on
  • Ability to interpret basic arrhythmias on Phillips monitors; consult Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) or MD as needed
  • Comfortable working with surrogates and families
  • Must complete all required MyJourney modules prior to arrival (no exceptions)

Support & Resources

  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner onsite 7 PM to 7 AM
  • Neonatologist onsite 7 AM to 7 PM and on-call overnight for critical infant oversight
  • Respiratory Therapists available 24/7 (1-2 in unit)
  • Pharmacy available 24/7
  • Charge nurse present each shift
  • No nurse aides on unit

Orientation & Additional Notes

  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts
  • Scrub color: Navy blue
  • Ventilators: High frequency vent, Draeger, Nitric Oxide, Nava Ventilation
  • IV pumps: Currently Medifusion, transitioning to Alaris syringe pumps
  • Floating: Minimal float to Pediatrics; all NICU travelers required to float to Pediatrics and Postpartum (including couplet care)
  • Busy unit with very sick babies; must be comfortable with high acuity and complex care

This position is ideal for experienced NICU nurses who are comfortable with high-acuity neonatal care, working in a fast-paced environment, and flexible with floating to related units.
