Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday, rotating through 0630-1500, 0900-1730, and 1100-1930
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Weekend and call coverage: Voluntary opportunities available


Position Summary

  • Provide professional perioperative nursing care based on current standards and Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Recommended Practices.
  • Care for patients from pediatric through geriatric populations in the holding area, operative suite, and post-operative settings.
  • Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care during surgical interventions.
  • Maintain sterile field and ensure availability and functionality of surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Apply principles of aseptic technique, surgical technique, patient positioning, and safety protocols.
  • Provide preoperative teaching and health education to patients and families.
  • Maintain professional communication and demonstrate emotional tolerance when interacting with patients, families, and staff.
  • Accept accountability for ongoing competency and knowledge in perioperative nursing, including staying current on trends, scientific advances, biomedical equipment, and ethics.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Pennsylvania
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to function effectively as a team member and liaison between patients and staff
  • Demonstrated tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and professional attitude in patient and staff interactions
  • Knowledge of perioperative nursing practices and standards (AORN)
  • Ability to maintain mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament in stressful situations

Additional Information

  • If candidates do not meet preferred qualifications, an in-house 6-month Operating Room training course will be provided and must be started upon hire or transfer into the OR role.
  • Weekend coverage and call are voluntary, not mandatory.
