Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit

Location: Newburgh, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Nights (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
Patient Population:

• Cardiac (post cath stents/interventions, pacers)
• CIWA/BH
• Sepsis
• DKA
• CVA
• CPAP
• Feeding tubes
• Craniotomy post-op day 2
• GI bleeds
• Hypothermic/bear hugger

Unit Information

• 16 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: Days 1:3-4, Nights 1:3-4 (1:5 for Med/Surg)
• Charge Nurse assignment: 1:2 patients
• Strong CNA support and teamwork
• Navy blue scrubs required; no competing health system or agency logos allowed
• Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires
• Float requirement: First to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float
• Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday
• On-call/call-back: Not required
• Attendance: More than 3 call-ins may result in termination

Required Qualifications

• Active current compact RN license
• Minimum 2 years RN experience
• Minimum 1 full year of Step Down Unit experience
• Completion of at least 1 prior travel assignment
• Trauma Level II experience
• Current certifications: AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required)
• Telemetry/12-lead EKG interpretation skills (travelers must pass telemetry tests)
• Ability to initiate and titrate drips (antiarrhythmics, Heparin, Insulin, etc.)
• Post-surgical assessment and care skills
• Neuro assessments including NIHSS and dysphagia screening

Preferred Skills

• Experience with stable home ventilators
• Management of PleurX/pericardial/lumbar drains and VP shunts
• Use of Narcan drips
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, resilience, and adaptability
• Social and team-oriented attitude

Additional Information

• No local candidates within a 40-mile radius considered
• COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)
• Orientation includes weekly sessions through July
• Guaranteed set hours except during holidays when the unit may be closed
