Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel Position
Location: Leavenworth, Kansas
Employment Type: Health Services - Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care including:
- Executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders
- Dispensing and administering medications
- Assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients
- Applying nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents
- Performing technical/clinical procedures within scope of education and licensure
- Attending sick calls with physicians and preparing inmates/residents for examination
- Operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required
- Examining and assessing new or ill/injured inmates/residents and referring to emergency care as needed
- Performing emergency procedures and notifying providers for treatment orders
- Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate
- Supervise and guide licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff
- Maintain good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies
- Use corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures while exercising independent judgment
- Evaluate medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication
- Maintain security and confidentiality of all medical records
- Assist Health Service Administrator with medical file reviews and documentation
- Monitor potential catastrophic illnesses closely
- Audit pharmacy use for formulary adherence and comply with pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances
- Observe and record inmate/resident behavior
- Inspect medical unit for contraband and securely store or dispose of supplies and equipment
- Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups
- Assist with preparation and maintenance of medical records, reports, and logs
- Interpret medical, technical, governmental, and legal documents
- Respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings as necessary
- Facilitate accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by providing efficient and appropriate medical services
- Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports; take action in serious incidents and emergencies
Required Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited college, university, or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing
- Current RN licensure in the state of Kansas
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of professional nursing experience
