Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric and Adult Med Surg
Location: Monterey, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Unit Overview
- Pediatric and adult medical-surgical unit (Main West Med Surg)
- Pediatric patients range from 29 days to 15 years old
- 20 beds, all private rooms
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Pediatrics: 1:4
- Adults: 1:5
- No telemetry on unit; continuous respiratory monitors available (O2 sat, RR, HR, ETCO2)
- No ventilators; HFNC available for adults only (peds requiring HFNC transferred to ICU)
- Adult hospitalists and intensivists available 24/7
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7 and responds to all codes
- IV team not available; IR RNs trained in ultrasound-guided IV insertions
- Charge nurse on each shift who carries a small patient load (2-3 patients)
- CNAs available on PM and as needed on night shifts, caring for 5-7 patients
Patient Population and Common Diagnoses
- Pediatrics: RSV, croup, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, gastrointestinal issues, straightforward post-operative care
- Adults: Women’s health, adolescents, alcohol withdrawal, dementia/geriatric care, ENT post-ops, appendectomies, cholecystectomies, urosepsis, plastic surgeries, small bowel obstructions, bowel resections
Required Qualifications
- California RN license or California EMS license
- Minimum 2 years of experience in pediatric and adult medical-surgical nursing
- BLS (AHA) and PALS certifications required; ACLS preferred
- Negative nicotine/cotinine drug screen required (nicotine patch use must be documented)
Orientation and Floating
- 3-4 shifts of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
- Floating limited to other medical-surgical units only
Work Schedule and Requirements
- Every other weekend required:
- PM shift weekends: Saturday and Sunday
- Night shift weekends: Friday and Saturday
- Required to work one major holiday per contract
- Scrubs provided; color is teal
Additional Notes
- Nurses may be responsible for total patient care despite availability of nurse aides
- No telemetry monitoring responsibilities
- Unit is nicotine-free; positive nicotine/cotinine results without legitimate reason may result in contract cancellation
