Job Summary

The Pathologists' Assistant plays a key role in the Pathology Department by performing gross examination of complex surgical pathology specimens and supervising the autopsy service. This position contributes to the efficiency of pathology and laboratory services through technical and administrative responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead grossing activities: describe, examine, and prepare surgical specimens for histological processing.
• Assist Residents and technical staff with gross dissections and teach grossing techniques and procedures.
• Manage day-to-day morgue operations, ensuring compliance with patient care, regulatory, and quality standards.
• Provide expertise and leadership in the autopsy service, including autopsy prosection.
• Exercise independent judgment and collaborate with laboratory directors on technical and administrative decisions.
• Oversee project management, budget development, supply/resource management, and staffing issues (hiring, competency assessment, development, corrective actions).
• Participate in seminars and provide instruction to Residents, medical students, and staff on autopsy and surgical pathology techniques and protocols.
• Perform all work leading up to but not including diagnosis.
• Handle complex surgical resections (e.g., pelvic exenterations, Whipple procedures) and autopsies (gross, PAD/FAD, clinical summary).

Required Qualifications

• ASCP Certification (mandatory)
• New York State License (mandatory)
• Experience grossing complex surgical cases
• EPIC experience preferred
