Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse

  • Shift: Approximately 35.25 hours per week
  • Schedule: Every other weekend
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Standard: 1:2 (can go to 1:3 based on patient acuity)
    • Fresh cardiac open heart patients: 1:1
  • Floating: Ability to float to CCU/CTICU, ICU, and/or stepdown units
  • Charting System: Epic
  • Scrubs Color: Royal Blue
  • Travel Experience: First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience NOT required)

Required Experience & Skills

  • Fresh open heart surgical patient experience
  • Experience with:
    • CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting)
    • Intra-aortic balloon pump
    • Impella device
    • TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
    • Valve replacement surgeries
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • Stroke CEUs (Continuing Education Units)

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS: AHA required; RQI and AHA instructor cards acceptable. Certificates expiring within a month of start require renewal confirmation.
  • BLS: AHA required; RQI and AHA instructor cards acceptable. Certificates expiring within a month of start require renewal confirmation.
  • Stroke CEUs: Required (1 year expiration).
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required for all RNs; must be completed within 72 hours of signing and valid within 12 months.
  • Competency Exam: Must be completed within 72 hours of signing; valid within 12 months.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required for adult critical care and related units; must be completed within 72 hours of signing and valid within 12 months.
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for adult critical care specialties, ED, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, and Labor & Delivery units; must be updated annually.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB): Required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs. Online portion must be completed by hire date; in-person portion within 14 days of start.
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication): Pharmacology and EKG exams required with remediation process for failures.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • TB Testing: Negative TB test (blood or skin) within 3 months of start or 2-step PPD with specified timing. Positive TB history requires additional clearance.
  • Physical Exam: Within 12 months of start; must clear candidate to perform essential job functions and be free of communicable disease.
  • Drug Screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start; instant tests not accepted.
  • Fit Test: On-site fit testing mandatory; facial hair must be shaved unless accommodation approved.
  • Flu Vaccination: Annual influenza vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required.
  • Latex Questionnaire: Allergy screening required if job tasks involve glove use or respirator use.
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance: Required prior to start; must be updated annually.
  • Color Blind Exam: Required if job tasks require color discrimination; valid within 12 months.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Check: Criminal background check required within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches. No open cases allowed.
  • Employment History: 7 years of work history required; New Jersey candidates require verification of at least 1 year prior to start with no gaps over 30 days.
  • References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
  • State License Verification: Must be current and match legal name; NURSYS verification required as applicable.
  • Orientation & Facility Policies: Must complete floating policy acknowledgment and facility-specific job description prior to start.
  • Annual Education: Completion of annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment required.

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must be able to float to critical care and stepdown units.
  • Epic charting experience is required.
  • Scrubs color is royal blue for this assignment.
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply; prior travel experience is not mandatory.
  • All certifications and competencies must be current or renewed prior to start.
  • Compliance with all health screenings, vaccinations, and background checks is mandatory.
