Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel/Contract

Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Facility & Unit Details

• Hospital ER with 37 staffed beds
• Level III trauma center, Stroke and STEMI certified
• Combined adult/pediatric ER
• May float to a free-standing 14-bed ER (8 miles away, 5–10 minute drive)
• No mid-shift floating

Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of ER experience
• Work every 3rd weekend
• EPIC experience required
• COVID and Flu vaccination required (COVID exemption may be accepted with documentation and approval)
• Caribbean Blue Scrubs required

Certifications Required

• ACLS (American Heart Association)
• BCLS/BLS (Basic Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) – required for psych positions (note: may be required here)

Competency Exams

• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (80% pass rate)
• Unit-specific competency exam (80% pass rate)
• Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (for ER, ICU, CCU, Telemetry RNs)
• Core Competency Exams (Parts I, II, III) updated annually with 80% pass rate

Licensure & Verification

• State nursing license primary source verification within 30 days of start
• NURSYS verification (if applicable) within 30 days of start
• Education verification through school or National Student Clearinghouse
• Transcript/Diploma required (or official transcript/third party verification as placeholder)

Background Checks & Compliance

• Background checks within 30 days of assignment start, including:

  • 7-year county checks (re-run annually or with location change)
  • National Federal, USA Criminal Search (if lived outside IA in last 7 years)
  • Social Security Trace
  • FACIS III, OFAC, OIG/EPLS, National Sex Offender Search, SAM
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
• Iowa SING Check required (must be run through Iowa State SING website, not Sterling)
• 2 supervisory references required (one within last year, second within last 2 years)

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Annual physical exam or statement of health within 1 year of start
• Fit mask test within 12 months (3M-N95 mask sizes specified)
• Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap booster within 10 years or declination
• Negative TB test (QuantiFERON gold or TSpot within 90 days) or chest x-ray if positive
• Annual TB questionnaire for positive reactors
• Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 live vaccines at least 28 days apart
• Hepatitis B: completion of 3-dose series, positive titer, or declination
• Varicella: positive titer or 2 live vaccines at least 28 days apart
• 10-panel drug screen including THC within 30 days of start
• Flu vaccination required for current flu season or approved exemption
• COVID-19 vaccine preferred (as of 7/7/2025)

Facility Specific Requirements

• Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Adult Abuse through Iowa HHS website (certifications required)
• Online modules temporarily completed onsite (time not paid)
• Signed Mercy Medical Center - Iowa SING Memorandum of Understanding
• COVID-19 and Flu exemption request forms must be used if applicable

Additional Notes

• Resumes must include 7 years of employment history or back to graduation with no gaps over 30 days
• Skills checklist required for ER and any floated units
• Employment verifications for last 7 years required with rehire eligibility status
• HIPAA Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgement required annually

This position is ideal for experienced ER Registered Nurses comfortable working in a Level III trauma center with pediatric and adult patients, who meet the specified certifications and compliance requirements.
