Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Maryville, Tennessee
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
  • Weekend Coverage: Every other weekend
  • Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Unit Focus: Inpatient stroke and TIA unit with higher acuity med-surg patients
  • Float Requirement: Must be willing to float to other units based on need and skill set
  • Staffing Ratio (Nights): 1 nurse to 6 patients
  • Medication System: Omnicell
  • Patient Diagnoses Commonly Seen: Stroke/TIA, Seizure, Syncope, Pneumonia, Chest Pain, Dialysis, Acute Kidney Failure, Post Heart Catheterization, Respiratory Failure, Encephalopathy, Congestive Heart Failure, Sepsis
  • Special Procedures: Peritoneal dialysis, continuous bladder irrigation
  • Focus: High emphasis on patient experience

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Tennessee
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Driver’s License/State ID: Required immediately upon signing for computer access and must be carried on duty
  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year background check within 12 months of start date
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter
    • Fingerprinting required if applicable (e.g., if lived/worked in WV in last 7 years)
  • Education Verification: Highest level of education must be verified (diplomas not accepted as placeholders)
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with specific background and lighting requirements
  • Online Modules: Must be completed within 72 hours of assignment; required for clearance to start
  • Pass/Fail Testing: Medication and arrhythmia tests required; two attempts allowed; must pass with 84%
  • Floating Policy: Signed acknowledgment required (not required for non-clinical roles)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Physician’s statement within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Immunizations and Testing:
    • Negative TB test (True 2-step PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or Tspot) within 90 days of start
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within last 10 years if working in high-risk areas
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required
    • Hepatitis B: Documentation of vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine or approved exemption required by specified deadlines (not required for remote workers)
  • Drug Testing: 5-panel drug screen within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit Mask: Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation

Competency and Training Requirements

  • Core Competencies: Annual completion of Core Part I, II, and III training including universal precautions, cultural diversity, pain management, harassment, fire safety, ergonomics, patient rights, OSHA blood-borne pathogens, and TJC National Patient Safety Goals
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency: Annual exam with full score breakdown required
  • Additional Competencies: Color blindness testing if assigned to Emergency Department or Pediatric ER

Additional Notes

  • This position requires flexibility to float to other units as needed.
  • The unit uses Omnicell medication dispensing system.
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete required online modules and pass mandatory testing prior to orientation.
  • Badge photo and all compliance documents must be submitted timely to ensure clearance.
  • No first-time travel nurses will be considered for this role.
