Registered Nurse – CVPICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Orange, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Hours per week: 36
- Start Date: August 10
- Return to Office (RTO): 7 days maximum
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling
- Documentation System: Cerner
- Floating Requirements: Yes; must float to PICU or NICU first, may also float to Pediatric Medical/Surgical Oncology floor
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month, including some holidays (shared with regular staff)
- On-call: Not required
- Patient Population: Highly variable, mostly surgical patients, majority are infants
- Special Procedures/Unit Details:
- ECMO (technicians operate pumps)
- Use of Nitric Oxide, pacemakers, chest tubes, invasive monitors
- Bedside procedures such as chest tube placement and cardioversions
- No floating to Emergency Department or Mental Health
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in California
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Pediatrics CVICU experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) experience
- NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) experience
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Background Checks:
- Criminal background check within 60 days of start (7-year search including SSN trace, all counties lived/worked, national databases, sex offender registry, education verification)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 60 days of start
- Drug Testing: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 60 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted; marijuana testing not allowed)
- Immunizations and Screenings:
- Tdap vaccine required (TD or Dtap not acceptable)
- Negative TB test (IGRA or 2-step PPD) within 60 days of start or valid chest X-ray for past positives
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; boosters if titers low/negative
- Hepatitis B: Positive titer, declination, or proof of 3-shot series
- Seasonal Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 9 – Mar 31)
- Mask Fit Testing: Required prior to start; cannot be completed onsite. Acceptable masks include 9205+, 3M 8210, 8110s, and 1804. Required for PICU and other specified units.
- Physical Exam: Aya standard physical within 1 year of start (not required to be updated annually)
- Eye Exam: In-person visual acuity exam required prior to start (Snellen or Titmus acceptable)
- Color Blind Exam: In-person Ishihara test required prior to start
Orientation and Onboarding
- Completion of assigned orientation modules prior to starting on the floor (approximately 6-8 hours, with specific deadlines)
- Facility-specific documents and acknowledgments required before start, including:
- Job description acknowledgment
- Non-disclosure agreement
- Safety and conduct packets
- Fingernail hygiene policy acknowledgment (no artificial nails allowed; natural nails must be ≤ ¼ inch)
- Mission, vision, and values acknowledgment
- COVID-19 religious or medical exemption forms if applicable
- Badge pickup on first shift; temperature checks and prescreening may be required before building access
- Photo for badge must be professional and submitted timely
Additional Notes
- First-time travelers may be considered if they have 2 years of strong experience
- No on-call responsibilities
- No floating to Emergency Department or Mental Health units
- Medication and pediatric competency exams required, including NICU pharmacology competency if applicable
- Must complete unit-specific skills checklist signed and dated
- Verification of 2 previous employers with up to 7 years of relevant experience required prior to start (cannot be pending)
This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work in a high-acuity pediatric cardiovascular intensive care unit with a diverse patient population primarily consisting of infants and surgical cases.
