Job Opportunity: Sterile Processing Supervisor
Location: Fairlawn, Ohio

Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Supervisor independently leads the operations of the Sterile Processing Department and performs all functions of an Instrument Technician.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily department operations and delegate work effectively.
- Schedule staffing to ensure proper production of supplies.
- Coordinate, train, and evaluate staff performance; act as preceptor for orientation and education.
- Participate in interviewing, evaluation, and disciplinary processes with management support.
- Ensure quality control and efficient production of processed products following Infection Control, Joint Commission, AORN, AAMI, and other standards.
- Manage audits for trays and case carts; ensure instruments and supplies are provided on schedule.
- Oversee instrument repair and restoration programs.
- Assist management with budget needs and monitor departmental budget parameters.
- Develop and update departmental policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
- Ensure compliance with manufacturing guidelines for sterilization and reusable instruments.
- Maintain inventory, storage, record keeping, and security of Central Processing, including vendor supplies.
- Prepare statistical reports for Central Processing.
- Supervise proper handling and utilization of supplies, equipment, and instruments to ensure patient and personnel safety in the OR.
- Manage emergency situations effectively.
- Responsible for all Performance Improvement (PI) monitoring in the department.
- Act as liaison to vendors and sales representatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Sterile Processing program required.
- College degree preferred.
Experience
- 3 to 5 years in sterile processing, operating room, or similar setting.
- 1 to 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience required.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of decontamination and sterilization sciences, case cart systems, and medical/surgical supplies and equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of standards including AAMI, FDA, JACH, OSHA.
Certifications
- Sterile Processing Certification required (CBSPD preferred or must obtain within six months of hire).
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Valid government-issued photo ID required and must be carried on assignment.
- Criminal background check within 1 year of start; updated for breaks in service of 2+ months.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Pre-employment physical exam within 1 year of start confirming ability to perform essential job functions safely.
- Immunizations and health requirements:
- Tdap within 10 years.
- Negative TB test (Qgold preferred within 6 months) or chest x-ray clearance if prior positive.
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella: positive titers or 2 MMR vaccines; boosters required for negative/equivocal titers.
- Hepatitis B series, positive titer, or declination accepted.
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines; booster required for negative/equivocal titers.
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required annually (strict deadline enforcement).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen (including nicotine) within 30 days of start.
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, safety, confidentiality, and code of conduct documents prior to start.
- 2 professional references required, including at least 1 from the most recent employer.
- Employment application with 3 years prior work history, including 2 years clinical practice in acute care and similar area.
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually.
Additional Notes
- BCI & FBI fingerprinting NOT required.
- ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, CNOR certifications may be required or preferred depending on role specifics.
- Facility-specific forms and attestations must be completed prior to start.
