Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (LTAC MedSurg)

Location: Redlands, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • RN position in a skilled nursing facility within a hospital setting.
  • Patient population includes many short-term rehab patients (fractures, strokes, long-term IV antibiotics).
  • Average patient length of stay: 2-3 weeks.
  • Primary diagnoses: Osteomyelitis, hip and knee replacement, fractures.
  • Unit size: 8 rooms/16 beds, average daily census of 10.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5, max 1:7 (rare).
  • Schedule: Every other weekend required.
  • Float within areas of competency (MedSurg 4100 and 5100).
  • No on-call duties.
  • Documentation systems: Omnicell med system, Meditech Expanse.
  • Communication: SBAR method.
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs (not provided, no logos/patterns).
  • First-time travelers are welcome.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in California
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience, including Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Med Surg / Telemetry experience
  • Telemetry experience
  • Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) experience
  • Post Acute care experience
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
  • MAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior)
  • Experience with blood glucose monitoring
  • Experience with NG tube insertion and management
  • Experience with ostomy care
  • Experience with tube feedings (Gravity/Syringe/Pump)
  • Experience with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
  • Experience with female and male Foley catheter insertion
  • Experience with nephrostomy tube care
  • Experience with peritoneal dialysis/CAPD
  • Experience with central line care/management
  • Experience with peripheral line care/management
  • Experience with PICC line management
  • Experience starting and maintaining IVs
  • Experience with anticoagulation therapy
  • Experience with antihypertensives
  • Experience with reversal agents
  • Experience caring for patients with CVA (stroke), neuromuscular disease, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury
  • Experience using Hoyer lift
  • Experience with tracheostomy care/management
  • Experience with COVID care
  • Experience with suctioning (ETT, NT)
  • Experience with pneumonia management
  • Experience with complex wound care
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and isolation precautions/PPE
  • Every other weekend availability required
  • Ability to float within competency areas

Prior Travel Experience

  • Not required (first-time travelers are accepted).

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • COVID vaccination plus 1 booster required or agency-approved medical/religious exemption.
  • Fit mask testing required prior to start.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days of contract start, updated annually.
  • Required immunizations or titers: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • 10-panel drug screen including THC within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within last 12 months, updated annually.
  • Background checks including SS trace, county searches, nationwide, sex offender, and international if applicable.
  • Professional references required (2 within last 2 years).
  • Various facility-specific acknowledgments and signed documents related to abuse reporting, confidentiality, code of conduct, drug-free workplace, and safety training.

Summary

This is a travel/contract RN position in a skilled nursing facility with a focus on short-term rehab patients. The role requires a minimum of 2 years RN experience, BLS and MAB certifications, and a broad set of clinical skills related to MedSurg and complex patient care. Prior travel experience is not required, making it suitable for first-time travelers. The contract length is approximately 13 weeks with every other weekend coverage expected.
