Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical Telemetry (Night Shift)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Night shift (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Staffing ratio goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
- Variable weekends based on unit needs
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted for final schedule balancing
- Floating required to other MedSurg Oncology units
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday–Friday, dayshift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Adult and geriatric patients
- Cares for all solid tumor cancers across the cancer journey: new diagnosis, treatment, and end-of-life care
- Common diagnoses include:
- Breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, esophageal cancers
- Patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy
- Patients may have true medical-surgical issues
- Heavy focus on infection prevention and fall prevention
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience, including telemetry experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Preferred Qualifications
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Previous travel experience preferred
- ONS Chemotherapy certification preferred
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, sex offender registry, motor vehicle record (if applicable), and nationwide checks
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific fingerprinting code and process
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire)
- MMR (2 vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, rubella)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B (titer or 3-vaccine series or signed declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31)
- Competency exams required:
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 1 year of start and annually thereafter (minimum passing score 76%)
- Annual requirements:
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate
- Ethics and compliance policies acknowledgment
- License verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
Electronic Health Record System
- EPIC computerized charting
Additional Notes
- Candidates must complete all required documentation and certifications prior to or shortly after start as specified
- Candidates with gaps in employment over 30 days with this facility may require updated health documents and drug screening
- Facility emphasizes infection control and patient safety protocols
- No telehealth duties; "Tele" refers to telemetry monitoring only

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
