Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Role: PCU Registered Nurse (Progressive Care Unit)
  • Ratios: 1:5 patient-to-nurse ratio
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating required between departments, units, and facility as needed, including Emergency Department inpatient holding
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Experience & Skills Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years
  • Prior Charge and Teaching Hospital Experience: Preferred but not required
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Skills & Work Settings

  • Experience in MS/Tele, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Telemetry monitoring (unit and remote)
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Cardiovascular Care:
    • Post cardiac events (e.g., MI, angiogram, cardiac cath, surgery)
  • Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line, peripheral line, PICC line care and management
    • Starting IVs
  • Medication Management:
    • Heparin protocols
    • Cardiac drips (management and titration)
    • PCA and procedural sedation administration
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: CVA care
  • Orthopedics: Peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
  • Plastics: Surgical drains
  • Respiratory: Chest tubes, CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, oxygen delivery, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
  • Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care, wound vac

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide, nationwide, sex offender, and international searches if applicable
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required (no pending at start)
  • State-specific background checks and registries as applicable
  • Primary source verification of professional nursing license (Missouri license verifiable on NURSYS)
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, and unit-specific competency exams (updated annually)
  • Color blindness testing within 12 months of start
  • Skills checklist within 1 year of start (oncology skills checklist if applicable)
  • Employment application and professional references required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
  • Facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, dress code policies, and orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) completed prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments may be required as needed
  • On-call requirements: Not applicable
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • Candidates must adhere to facility policies or risk removal from shifts

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experience in progressive care or telemetry settings, comfortable with floating across units, and able to meet comprehensive certification and compliance requirements. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
