Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Johnstown, New York
Contract Length: 26 weeks

Job Overview

• Position at a medium security correctional facility for men.
• Provide RN coverage for vacant positions, regular days off, sick days, and vacation days for existing nurses.
• Work up to 40 hours per week with shifts between 6:30 AM and 10:00 PM.
• Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
• Care provided to an incarcerated male population.
• Requires self-motivation and ability to work semi-independently with physician on-call support.

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 1 year of acute care RN experience (Medical/Surgical, ER, ICU).
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
• Previous experience working in New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is a plus.
• Must be dependable and compliant with all security directives.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess inmate and staff medical complaints.
• Document physician orders and prescriptions, enter lab work, and create requisitions.
• Administer medications.
• Perform end-of-shift narcotics, sharps, and tool counts.
• Respond to emergency sick calls and medical emergencies; utilize AED.
• Provide vaccinations, wound care, diabetic care, and inmate health teaching and evaluation.
• Proficient with computers, Microsoft programs, and able to learn DOS-based software.

Certifications & Licenses Required

• Current RN license valid in New York State.
• CPR certification.
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Background & Health Requirements

• Criminal background check including fingerprinting (to be completed onsite).
• Annual TB test or equivalent (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD within 12 months prior to start).
• Physical exam within 1 year of start date.
• Drug testing (9 panel) within 1 year of start.
• Vaccination documentation or titers for:

  • Rubeola (Measles)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (or declination)
  • Varicella
• Flu seasonal vaccination or declination for 2025-26.
• COVID-19 vaccine booster preferred but not required.
• Completion of TB Questionnaire annually.

Additional Requirements

• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required for RNs.
• Competency exam required for all candidates.
• Two professional references required.
