Job Summary: Laboratory Specialist (MLS) - Travel/Contract

Location: Bowie, Maryland
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 13 weeks)
Start Date: January 5, 2026
Shift: Monday to Friday, 5x8 hour shifts, alternating day (07:30-16:00) and evening (15:30-00:00) shifts; flexibility to rotate shifts is required
Holidays: Required as scheduled
Weekends: Not required
On-Call: Not required
Floating: May be required within the department

Experience Requirements

• Specialty: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
• Years of Experience Required: 2 years
• Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers with strong experience are accepted

Licenses & Certifications Required

• Required: ASCP certification
• Preferred: ASCP-MLS and BLS (Basic Life Support)
• Other Certifications to Consider (as applicable):

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background Checks:

  • 7-year criminal history check within 30 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification for highest level of education
  • Maryland State Exclusions List check within 30 days of start

• Identification:

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • I9 or Attestation

• Health Requirements:

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (including Latex Screen)
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers:

    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (if applicable)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (updated annually)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (positive titer or vaccination proof required)
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start (instant tests not accepted)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season
  • COVID vaccination not required for this location but documentation may be collected for tracking

• Competency Exams:

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (as applicable)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates)
  • Specialty-specific competency exams (age-specific, dysrhythmia/EKG as applicable)

• Facility Specific Documents:

  • Passport-style photo for badge
  • Confidentiality agreement
  • Dress code review
  • Badge application (time sensitive)
  • Job description acknowledgment

References & Work History

• Two supervisory references within 1 year of start (charge RNs, supervisors, or managers)
• Employment application/resume completed within 30 days of start
• Verification of previous 5 years of employment history (attestation accepted if necessary)

Additional Notes

• Candidate must be flexible with alternating day and evening shifts.
• Floating within the department may be required.
• Holidays must be worked as scheduled.
• No weekend or on-call requirements.

This position is suitable for MLS professionals with at least 2 years of experience who are open to travel assignments and flexible shift work. Prior travel experience is not mandatory.
