Job Summary: Registered Nurse (L&D) - Per Diem
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Employment Type: Per Diem
Shift: 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Patient Ratio: 1:2
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery (L&D) experience (highest required)
- Preferred experience in:
- High Risk Antepartum
- Teaching Hospital
- Level I Trauma Center
Licenses & Certifications Required
- Active nursing license
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred but not required
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification preferred (AWHONN Beginner preferred)
Clinical Skills & Competencies Required
- Use and interpretation of External and Internal Fetal Monitoring (EFM, IUPC)
- Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
- Venous blood draws, IV insertion and maintenance, infusion pumps/drips
- Administration and monitoring of:
- Antihypertensives
- Insulin drips
- Magnesium Sulfate therapy
- Pitocin (oxytocin)
- Prostaglandins
- Terbutaline
- Amnioinfusion
- Assist with high-risk and vaginal deliveries
- Circulate for C-sections, assist with forceps/vacuum extraction
- Manage hemorrhage/shock, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension
- Neonatal care including:
- APGAR scoring
- Neonatal resuscitation
- Radiant warmers/thermoregulation
- Infant identification and assessment
- Newborn hypoglycemia management
- Pain management including epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, IV conscious sedation, nitrous oxide, opioids
- Breastfeeding and lactation support
- Foley catheter insertion and management
- Fundus, lochia, perineum care
- Use of electric/manual breast pumps
- Wound assessment and care
- Couplets care and multiple births management
Preferred Skills
- Assist with sterile speculum exams (effacement, dilation, station, presentation)
- Non-Stress Tests (NST)
- Reflex checks, edema assessment, clonus
- Adult and infant/neonatal cardiac arrest response
- Use of rapid response/code teams
- Telemetry interpretation
- Administration of blood and blood products
- Central line maintenance (CVC/PICC)
- Anticoagulants and antiseizure medication administration
- Collecting cord blood samples
- Use of PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) IV
- Cervical cerclage, D&C, tubal ligation assistance
Orientation & Training
- 2-3 days orientation:
- Virtual orientation (Friday)
- In-person orientation (Monday)
- Epic training (Wednesday) with test-out option for experienced users
- Charting system: Epic, Oboix
- Medication system: Pyxis
- Scrubs provided (Royal Blue)
Additional Requirements
- Must commit to at least 4 shifts per month
- Must prioritize compliance and meet all credentialing deadlines before start date
- 2 clinical references and at least 1 leadership reference from assignments within the last year required
- 7-year criminal background check including sex offender registry
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start
- Respiratory fit mask test required
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within past year
- Immunizations or titers required for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (proof of series or declination)
- Varicella (immunity by history, titer, or vaccination)
- 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Flu vaccination or declination accepted (seasonal requirement)
- COVID-19 vaccination requirements apply; medical exemptions may be considered, religious exemptions not accepted
- Medication and pharmacology competency exams required
- Color vision testing required
Prior Travel Experience
- Not required; first-time travelers accepted
