Position Details

Job Description

  • AK nursing license required. Travelers with a compact license can start if they provide proof of full application for an AK license, which must be obtained before starting.
  • Nurses may assist with PICU patients, sometimes with an orientee; PICU is not the primary assignment but may occur.
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Pediatric floor: 1:4
    • PICU: 1:2
    • Ventilated patients: 1:1 (due to unit geography)
  • Support staff includes CNAs and a med clerk; charge nurse typically has no patients.
  • Floating within scope to NICU and Pediatrics is required.
  • Block scheduling is accommodated.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
  • On-call: Not required.
  • Local radius rule: candidates must be outside a 100-mile radius.
  • Must be culturally sensitive to Native populations.

Experience & Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-timers accepted)
  • Certifications Required:
    • BCLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Licensing:
    • Alaska RN license required (compact license accepted temporarily with proof of AK license application)
  • Guaranteed Hours: Up to 36 hours per week (40 hours for 12-hour OR nurses and techs)

Work Environment & Scheduling

  • No pod structure.
  • Support staff available.
  • Floating to NICU and Pediatrics as needed.
  • Block scheduling available.
  • Weekend shifts every other weekend.

Special Requirements

  • Must be culturally sensitive to Native populations.

Facility & Documentation Requirements

  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Parking: Free parking available in nearby parking structure.
  • Scrub color: Navy (L&D/OR scrubs provided)
  • Background checks and standard verifications required.
  • Physical exam, immunizations, and health screenings required, including:
    • Annual physical exam
    • Fit mask test (approved masks only, completed prior to arrival)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine proof
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination (facility-specific declination required)
    • Drug screening within 30 days of start
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical exemption (no declinations accepted)
    • COVID-19 vaccination required (medical exemptions accepted with documentation; no religious exemptions)
  • Competency exams required (medication/pharmacology, general competency)
  • References: 2 clinical references required
  • Skills checklist required
  • Facility-specific forms and onboarding tasks must be completed prior to start.
  • HealthStream training modules assigned during orientation.
