Job Opportunity: Behavioral Health Registered Nurse (Inpatient Psych)

Location: Christiansburg, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Details

• Shift: Primarily 3x12 hour shifts, 7 PM to 7 AM

  • Option for 4x12 hour shifts upon request
• Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
• Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
• Charting System: EPIC experience preferred
• Floating: May be required to float to Carilion Mental Health-Roanoke; mileage reimbursed for floating
• Accepts: First-time travelers and candidates with pending licenses (with conditions)
• Radius Rule: No local radius rule applies

Experience & Certification Requirements

• Specialty: Registered Nurse – Behavioral Health (Inpatient Psychiatric)
• Required Experience: Minimum 2+ years in specialty (Behavioral Health RN)
• Travel Experience: Preferred but not required; first-time travelers accepted
• Required Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
  • CPI Blue (Crisis Prevention Institute – Behavioral Health specific)
• Additional Certifications (as applicable):

  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC (check unit requirements)
• Licensure:

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if single-state non-compact license held

Unit Details

• 36-bed inpatient psychiatric unit
• Patient Ratios:

  • 7 AM to 11 PM: 1 nurse to 6-7 patients
  • 11 PM to 7 AM: 1 nurse to 10 patients

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background check covering 7 years of history, including education verification
• Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
• Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
• Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually
• Immunizations or titers required for:

  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
• TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
• Required forms and verifications include:

  • I9 or attestation
  • Driver’s License/State ID (must meet radius criteria)
  • E-Verify or attestation
  • Residency declaration if working on a compact license
  • Photo for badge (professional quality)
  • Compliance and confidentiality agreements
  • New hire paperwork and orientation manual acknowledgment
• References: 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
• Skills checklist updated annually

Additional Notes

• Facility allows 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
• Orientation manual review required prior to start (except inpatient RNs)
• Candidates must submit all scheduling requests upfront (RTO, block, special requests)
