Registered Nurse (Emergency Room) - Chicago, Illinois

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Location: Chicago, IL


Position Details

  • Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), no block scheduling
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (2 weekends per month)
  • Return to Office (RTO): Up to 5 days off maximum, no more than 2 consecutive days; no RTO on holidays, weekends, or the day before/after a holiday
  • Float Requirement: Mandatory float within scope to meet facility needs (facility-wide float policy)

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years recent acute care experience in the Emergency Department (ED)
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale Certification)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

Facility Highlights

  • Scrub color: Navy Blue (provided)

Location Preference

  • Locals accepted, preferred candidates living within 75 miles of the facility
  • Pending licenses are not accepted

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-Issued Photo ID: Clear and legible (color or black & white)
  • Background Checks: Must be current within 12 months, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years; includes SSN trace, nationwide and state checks, sex offender registry, and others as applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG Checks: Required within 30 days of start
  • Physical Exam: Within 12 months of start, signed by PA, NP, DO, or MD
  • Fit Mask Test: Annual N95 fit test required (specific mask models accepted)
  • Immunizations and Health Requirements:
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months, updated annually
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer with boosters if low titer
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer with booster if low titer
    • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 1), no declinations accepted
  • Drug Testing: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start, updated annually
  • Competency Exams: Medication test/pharmacology, color blind testing, dysrhythmia/EKG competency (preferred for ER RNs), and general competency exams required within 12 months of start

Additional Certifications & Competencies

  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required annually for all RNs in ED and critical care areas
  • Bystander Intervention Training Certificate: Required
  • Other Certifications: As applicable by unit and specialty

Facility-Specific Forms & Compliance

  • Completion of facility-specific HIS forms required for RNs and other roles before start date
  • Must use legal name (no nicknames) on all forms
  • Annual skills checklist and employment application required

Notes

  • This is a mandatory float facility; all staff must be willing and able to float as needed within their scope of practice.
  • No call requirements.
  • Locals preferred but travel candidates within 75 miles considered.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity Level 1 Trauma Center with a supportive team environment and structured scheduling. Candidates must meet all certification and compliance requirements prior to start.

I like floating to different departments so working una variety of settings was a big plus

Cons

The parking, I feel they should provide an ability for travelers to pay for parking per month even if at a slightly higher cost compared to staff
