Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)
Location: Columbia, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a Level 1 Trauma, Stroke, and STEMI Emergency Department (ED) with a Pediatric ED inside the main ED.
- Float between ED and ED Observation units (Psych center associated but no float there).
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 – 7:15), totaling 36 hours/week.
- Requires working 50% of holidays and every other weekend.
- Rotating shifts, holiday work, and work during inclement weather required.
- Physically active role requiring ambulating, reaching, and moving objects over 20 lbs.
- Exposure to patients with contagious illnesses.
- Must be able to work full shifts, take call, and work assigned weekends and holidays.
- No local candidates within 50 miles accepted.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, with ED experience within the last year required.
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification.
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification.
Required Background and Screening
- 7-year background check within 60 days of start, including alias/all names, counties lived/worked/school, national and federal criminal searches, sex offender search, social security trace, and exclusions lists (EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG).
- International background check if candidate traveled outside the USA in the last 7 years (exceptions for military on US ships without foreign stationing).
- Missouri Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) or Missouri Caregiver search must be on file within 60 days before starting (cannot start with both pending).
- Drug screening: Negative 7-panel drug test within 60 days of start.
- Photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID) required.
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (agency form acceptable).
- Fit mask test valid within 1 year (3M 1870+, 1860R, 1860S, or 9205). Annual renewal required.
- Immunizations/vaccinations:
- Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria) within 10 years or approved medical/religious exemption.
- Negative TB test (QGold, TSpot, or 2-step PPD) within 1 year; annual updates required. Positive TB requires chest x-ray and INH treatment documentation or facility-specific recommendation.
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines (at least 1 after 1980). No declinations or religious exemptions accepted; medical exemptions require facility approval.
- Hepatitis B series or positive/reactive titer required; boosters required for low titers. Declinations no longer accepted for new candidates after 7/1/2023.
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations or religious exemptions accepted; medical exemptions require facility approval.
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (10/01 – 03/31).
Documentation and Compliance
- Resume with minimum 7 years employment history, no gaps over 30 days, including education details.
- Two professional references within the last 2 years.
- Completion of facility-specific forms including Access and Confidentiality Agreement, New Hire Packet, and others as required.
- Must complete all required competency exams and safety acknowledgments.
Physical and Work Environment
- Active role requiring physical stamina and ability to handle patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
- Exposure to infectious diseases and need for adherence to infection control protocols.
- Facility operates 24/7; flexibility for shift changes and holiday coverage mandatory.
Additional Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers with trauma experience are accepted.
- Candidates must be able to work at the assigned location for the full contract term.
- Must be able to work substantial portions of assigned shifts and meet all attendance requirements.
