Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical

Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
  • Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts
  • Float Requirement: First to float within skillset; may float between nearby campuses (8-11 miles apart) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float
  • Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks; every other holiday
  • On Call/Call Back: Not required
  • Unit Size: 23 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:
    • Days (7:00 AM – 3:00 PM): 1:4-5
    • PMs (3:00 PM – 7:00 PM): 1:5-6
    • Nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM): 1:6-7 (Charge Nurse takes patient assignment on all shifts)
  • Scrub Code: Navy blue scrubs only; no hoodies, sweatshirts, or competing health system/agency logos
  • Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires
  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Not currently required (subject to change)
  • Attendance Policy: Three call-ins can result in termination

Patient Population & Clinical Skills

  • Patient types: Cardiac (chest pain, stress test/Lexiscan, post cath without intervention), CVA/TIA, hypotension, syncope/dizziness, shortness of breath, post-surgical, GI/Urology pre/post procedure, acute kidney injury, cellulitis, detox/CIWA
  • Clinical skills required:
    • Cardiac cath recovery (femoral/TR bands)
    • Post-surgical care (appendectomy, cholecystectomy, stone removal)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), neuro assessment, dysphagia screening
    • Initiate and titrate drips (Heparin, Insulin)
    • Indwelling drain management
    • Straight catheter and Foley care
    • NG tube insertion
    • Blood administration and documentation
  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills essential

Required Qualifications

  • Active compact Registered Nurse license
  • Current AHA BLS certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Minimum 2 years of strong Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • At least 1 prior travel assignment required
  • Recent EPIC charting experience required (checkoff class will be required)

Additional Information

  • No local candidates within a 40-mile radius will be considered
  • Orientation starts 7/6 with weekly sessions through July
  • GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week; guaranteed set hours per week except when unit is closed for holidays
