Registered Nurse (Orthopedic) - Night Shift
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Unit: Orthopedic (43 beds, all private rooms)
- Shift: 12-hour night shifts
- Hours per week: 36
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6 on 12-hour nights
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Friday/Saturday night shift)
- No call or standby requirement
- Travel RNs may float occasionally to similar MedSurg floors
Patient Population & Care
- Patient types: Postoperative orthopedic cases, trauma with fractures, wide variety of medical-surgical patients
- Common skills needed: Postoperative surgical care and general medical-surgical care
- Respiratory equipment: CPAP, heated high flow available; RNs troubleshoot as needed
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; RNs do not read their own strips
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Preferred clinical experience: 1-2 years in orthopedic/postoperative or med-surg nursing
- Must pass a comprehensive drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
Orientation & Work Environment
- Orientation: 12 non-billable hours plus unit-specific orientation (two sessions)
- Charge nurse present on every shift and takes patient assignments
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) support the unit with a ratio of approximately 1:7-8
- Dress code: Any color scrubs allowed; professional appearance required; tattoos and piercings must be covered
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
- Travel RN first to float if needed
