PCU RN - Night Shift

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 15 weeks

Job Details

• Shift: 12-hour night shifts (1830-0630)
• Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
• Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Beds: 40 beds (average daily census 24)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (both days and nights)
• Orientation: 1 day unit/department specific orientation
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
• Floating: Required to float to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients
• Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs

Required Experience & Certifications

• Specialty Experience: Minimum 2 years of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required
• Competencies:

  • Competent in Arterial Lines
  • Ability to titrate drips (Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Insulin)
  • Must read and interpret telemetry strips independently
  • Experience with high flow respiratory equipment troubleshooting

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Adults with cardiac medical/surgical needs
• Dialysis patients
• Cancer diagnoses
• Vascular conditions
• Sepsis
• Adult respiratory issues
• Stroke
• Post stent and pacer placement
• Renal failure

Unit Support & Environment

• Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
• Nurse aides/patient care techs available at a ratio of 1:12
• Tele/Monitor techs present, but RNs must interpret telemetry
• Equipment includes overhead lifts (in half the rooms), portable lifts, vein finders, bladder scanners
• Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, communication about medications
• Diverse patient population, primarily Hispanic and Somalian

Additional Requirements & Notes

• Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
• Driver’s license required to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius
• No full-time, part-time, or PRN employment with certain affiliated facilities allowed
• Blocked scheduling generally not approved unless weekends only
• Must be flexible, adaptable, a team player, and open to feedback
• Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of a 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved
