Unit Details
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Beds: 54 (2 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts, one shift per day
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Float in rotation with staff; travelers may float to general unit or other units only if competent and paired with trained nurse
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT required
- RNs are required to titrate drips
Equipment & Support
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare)
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read strips
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs:
- Day and evening: 1:9-10 ratio
- Night: 1:10-12 ratio
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Dress Code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; no piercings except ears
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required
- Local Placements: Accepts local clinicians within 50-mile radius
Licensure
- Active Illinois RN license required or confirmation that application process has been initiated
Summary
This is a 13-week contract for an experienced Neuro Med-Surg RN with prior travel experience and level 1 trauma skills. The role involves caring for complex neuroscience patients with a focus on titratable drips and requires strong neuro unit experience. The position offers 12-hour shifts with every other weekend and holiday requirements, no call or standby, and a supportive team environment with charge nurses and house supervisors on site.
