Registered Nurse (ICU)

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Number of Beds: 33 beds (average daily census: 16)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adult patients
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, respiratory distress
• Nurse Aide Support: Available based on census; may assist with 1:1s or floor support
• Respiratory Therapy Equipment: Nasal cannula to ventilator; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced RT equipment
• Monitors/Telemetry: RNs required to read, interpret, and document cardiac monitor strips (GE monitors); telemetry tech oversight present
• Floating Assignments: Typically to Progressive Care Unit (PCU), occasionally MedSurg with typical ratios of 1:4 or 1:5

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift Options: 0630-1830 (day), 1830-0630 (night)
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers; block scheduling generally not approved
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
• Orientation: 1 shift of unit-specific orientation
• Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved
• On-call Policy: If called back in, must arrive within 30 minutes
• Scheduling Notes: Blocked scheduling only considered for weekends; no shared schedules or carpooling for duos

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license required
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
• Driver’s license required at time of submission (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
• Must pass a pass/fail RN exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided)
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination

Clinical Responsibilities

• Titrate drips including cardiac drips, insulin, sedation
• Read, interpret, and document telemetry strips
• Provide care for critically ill adult patients with complex diagnoses
• Adhere to fingernail policy and other infection control standards

Additional Notes

• Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system (within 50 miles)
• Weekend shifts are Saturday and Sunday
• No approval for blocked scheduling except weekends only
