Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Common patient diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry monitors used (Phillips); nurses do not need to interpret strips
Shift Details
- 12-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotation with general unit staff; limited to skills competency if floated outside general unit
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIHSS certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience with heparin titrated drip based on PTT required (RNs must titrate drips)
Patient Care Support
- Nurse aides/patient care techs available with ratios:
- Day/evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
- Respiratory therapy equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Orientation & Policies
- 2-day unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required
- Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Licensing
- Active Illinois RN license required or proof that application process has been initiated
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 1 year Med Surg experience within the last year
- One completed travel nursing assignment
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Experience titrating heparin drip based on PTT (heparin gtt)
This position is suitable for experienced neuro med-surg RNs with prior travel assignments who are comfortable working in a busy acute care neuroscience unit.
