MedSurg/Tele Float Pool RN

Role Overview

• Registered Nurse assignment in the MedSurg/Tele Float Pool.
• 13-week contract.
• 12-hour shifts: 7a-7p or 7p-7a.
• Shift listed as nights.

Required Qualifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• Must pass a cardiac rhythm exam.
• Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips.
• Must work every other weekend.
• Must work holidays in the holiday rotation with permanent staff.
• Must provide an unexpired driver’s license with submission.

Unit / Float Scope

• Primary float pool units: 6N (36 beds) and 7N (29 beds).
• Other float units: 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), and Critical Care (20 beds).
• Travelers report to the clinical coordinator’s office before shift start for unit assignment.
• May float to all 6 units.
• Will most likely be assigned a parent unit and basic telemetry patients within scope of practice.

Patient Care / Clinical Details

• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is mainly 1:5-6 on days and nights; occasionally 1:7 toward the end of a shift depending on acuity.
• Common patient types include CHF, cardiac cath, CP, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, ortho, and oncology.
• Permanent staff administer chemo.
• No drip titration required.
• CPAP and BiPap are managed by RT.
• Most units have monitor techs.
• RN must be able to read and interpret strips.
• CNAs are used on all units.

Orientation

• 1-2 shifts with a preceptor.
