Job Description

General Summary

Registered Professional Nurses at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Illinois are licensed professionals who participate in an interdisciplinary approach to meet the expectations of critically ill pediatric patients (ages 0-18 years). Nurses are involved in the development of best practices to ensure individualized outcomes at discharge.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Professionalism:

    • Promote an environment of respect and compassion.
    • Maintain licensure and professional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS).
    • Participate in continuing education (minimum 16 hours every two years).
  • Quality/Safety:

    • Participate in quality improvement processes.
    • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to advocate for patients.
    • Educate patients and families to meet health needs.
  • Role Competency:

    • Act autonomously as part of the care team.
    • Administer compassionate patient care following the nursing process.
    • Adapt to changing conditions to meet patient needs.
  • Communication/Collaboration:

    • Maintain partnerships with physicians and other staff.
    • Attend required meetings and stay updated on practices.
    • Provide effective leadership in nursing care delivery.
  • Fiscal Responsibility/Resource Management:

    • Support the strategic plan of OSF SFMC and CHOI.
    • Seek cost-effective ways to provide care and services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  1. Critical care knowledge and skills appropriate for pediatric patients.
  2. Professional nursing practice knowledge acquired through an accredited School of Nursing.
  3. Current State license as a Registered Nurse.
  4. Unit-specific orientation and on-the-job training (3-6 months).
  5. Interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients and families.
  6. Analytical ability to assess and develop individualized patient care plans.
  7. Additional training for pediatric cardiovascular patients (6-8 weeks).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 3 hours).
  • Manual dexterity and ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to push/pull wheelchairs and lift patients.

Additional Information

  • Candidates must have a current Illinois RN license and certifications in BLS and PALS.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience is required.
  • Candidates must understand that OSF is a Drug-Free Campus and must pass a drug screening.
