Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical/Telemetry Unit

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • 20-bed general medical surgical and telemetry unit including orthopedic patients
  • Patient cases include total knee and hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases, pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses
  • Unit split by floors:
    • 7th floor: Medical/Surgical patients with behavioral health conditions (e.g., detox, dementia), secured floor
  • Must be comfortable caring for behavioral health patients; safety and de-escalation training provided
  • Care team includes CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs

Work Schedule & Staffing

  • Shift option: Day shift, 4 shifts of 12 hours each per week (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Ratios: 1:5 during days, 1:6 nights (night ratio may rarely be 1:7)
  • Floating required frequently to meet hospital staffing needs, including potential float to other units and campuses
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts out of 8 in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri night/Sat night)
  • Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical/Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Valid Driver's License

Facility & Policies

  • 100% nicotine-free facility
  • Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility)
  • Scrubs: Mandatory Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation)
  • Parking: Permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates apply

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required and updated every 30 days
  • Education verification required
  • State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required within 30 days of start
  • Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required
  • Annual skills checklist required
  • Two professional references from work within past 2 years required
  • Physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 1870+) within 1 year, updated annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if low/equivocal)
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal)
  • Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually (specific panel required)
  • Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory; documentation or declination required
  • COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions or declinations accepted

Additional Notes

  • Travelers are first to float and must be flexible to meet staffing needs across multiple units and campuses
  • Up to two weeks of Return to Origin (RTO) time permitted, with manager approval for additional requests
  • Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)
