Registered Nurse – Stepdown Neuro (Travel/Contract)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36

Unit & Patient Population

• Mixed Acuity: Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Stepdown care
• 48-bed unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
• Patient conditions include strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological disorders
• Eight beds equipped for long-term EEG monitoring
• Multi-care level unit; nurses may care for up to six Med Surg patients simultaneously

Staffing Ratios

• Medical Surgical/Telemetry: 1:5 (day), 1:6 (night), occasionally 1:7 (rare)
• Stepdown: 1:3-4 (day and night)

Required Experience & Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting
• EPIC electronic charting experience required
• First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center
• Must be prepared to float frequently within scope to various units, including potential floating to a nearby campus
• Drip medication administration required on all floors

Licensure & Certifications

• Active RN license for Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; booking delayed if not)
• ACLS, BLS, and other certifications as applicable per unit requirements (AHA standards)
• Primary source verification and NURSYS verification required prior to start

Work Environment & Policies

• 100% nicotine-free facility
• Scrubs: Mandatory Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation)
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
• Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
• Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility)
• Parking permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates

Background & Health Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required
• Comprehensive background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county, statewide, and federal checks
• Ongoing SAM and OIG checks every 30 days
• Education verification required
• State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required within 30 days of start
• Physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 or 1870+) within 1 year, updated annually
• Immunizations and health screenings required:

  • Tdap within last 10 years
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
  • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if low/equivocal)
  • Hepatitis B titer or declination
  • 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal)
  • Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
  • COVID vaccine preferred; exemptions accepted
• Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)

Additional Requirements

• Must submit requests for time off (RTO) with application; up to 2 weeks allowed, additional at manager discretion
• Travelers are first to float to meet staffing needs
• Two professional references from work within the past 2 years required
• Annual skills checklist required
• Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required

Notes

• RTO blackout dates due to local event: June 11–22, 2026
• Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs on certain floors

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs with neurology/stepdown skills who are flexible and able to float across multiple units in a high-acuity academic medical center environment.
