Registered Nurse First Assist (Operating Room) - Travel/Contract

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 4x10 hour shifts (06:45 - 17:15) with some weekday and weekend on-call duties
Hours per Week: 40 hours

Job Summary

• Position in a 30-bed adult Operating Room unit
• Operating Room RN First Assist role
• Call required on a rotating schedule including weeknights and weekends
• No floating outside scope of practice
• No block scheduling guarantee
• Local candidates within 75 miles radius not accepted
• Must start 30-60 days from credentialing submission due to medical affairs process

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in West Virginia
• Minimum 2 years of First Assist experience, including experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing
• Experience with Robotics, Urology, Thoracic Surgery, and Operating Room procedures

Certifications & Testing

• BLS required
• ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (verify specifics)
• Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates: EKG exam, Medication Calculation exam, Blood Administration test
• Annual competencies including medication test/pharmacology exam and color blindness testing
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, Behavioral Health)
• Stroke education hours required depending on unit assignment

Background & Health Requirements

• 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks updated annually and completed independently
• Sex offender search within 30 days of start and updated annually
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate medical provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
• Annual fit mask testing (N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) required; PAPR accommodations available if needed
• Negative TB test within 3 months of start or negative chest X-ray for positive responders
• Annual TB questionnaire for positive TB responders
• Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
• Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (no placeholders or pending results accepted)
• Flu vaccine required during flu season or approved exemption; COVID vaccine not mandatory

  • Specialty-specific skills checklist
  • Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years (1 reference required, must be from manager/supervisor/charge nurse within 1 year of start)
  • License and certification verification (clean license required)

  • Social Security Card (legible)
• Must comply with facility-specific documents including dress code, blood administration policy, math calculation review, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms, application request, delegate form, and state liability/time gap forms
• Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training
• Inservice training modules must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours) with transcript or certificate of completion submitted

• No permanent employees can return as travelers within 2 years of last permanent day worked at this facility
• Scrub color: Royal Blue/White (RN)
• Charting system: Cerner
• Free parking for travelers
• Facility is a Level IV Trauma Center and major teaching hospital
• Candidates with latex allergy must notify manager to avoid exposure

This position is ideal for experienced OR RN First Assist nurses with specialty skills in robotics, urology, and thoracic surgery, who are able to commit to a 13-week travel contract with on-call responsibilities.
