Registered Nurse (LDRP) - Nevada

Job Overview

• Location: Winnemucca, Nevada (Northern Nevada mountain town)
• Facility Type: Critical Access Hospital
• Unit: Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP)
• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
• Weekly Hours: 36 hours
• Shift Schedule: 3 shifts per week, start time between 7:00-7:30 AM, with a 30-minute lunch
• Scheduling: Modified self-schedule; flexibility required to help fill staffing gaps; weekend every other week; possible holiday rotation
• Orientation: 1 day general orientation plus 1-2 shifts on unit with preceptor, including orientation shift on scheduled shift

Unit Details

• L&D Beds: 4 LDRP beds, 2 postpartum beds, 1 exam room convertible to LDRP
• Postpartum Beds: 2 beds, all rooms monitored
• Birth Volume: Approximately 20 births per month, 200 per year
• Staffing: Typically 2 nurses per shift; extra staff called in only for multiple labors or sick babies
• C-Sections: OR team handles scrubbing, circulating, and recovery; OB nurse receives the baby
• Triage: No designated triage area; triage done in all rooms
• Charge Nurse: No charge nurse on unit; team approach; charge nurse available in ER/ICU for assistance
• Nurse Aides: Rarely available, assist with stocking and non-patient care tasks

Patient Population & Care

• Common Diagnoses: Low-risk labor, antepartum testing, postpartum couplets, well nursery, stabilization and transfer of sick nursery patients
• Care Scope: Must be comfortable caring for sick babies prior to transport (transfers can take ~3 hours)
• Drip Management: IV drips run through infusion devices; common drips include Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, antibiotics, and occasionally insulin
• Monitoring: RNs read their own electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) strips; must identify major and life-threatening rhythms
• Equipment: T-pieces for positive pressure ventilation (PPV), Vapotherm for high flow oxygen, Corometric monitors
• EFM System: Fetal Link & Cerner Community Works EMR

Medical Support

• OB Coverage: OB on call with ~30-minute response time; no in-house neonatologist; consults via transfer contact; high acuity babies stabilized and transferred out
• Pediatric Coverage: One pediatric provider on at a time; hospitalists cover nursery
• Anesthesia: On call after hours with response time under 20 minutes

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN)
• Specialty Experience: Must have LDRP experience with ability to function in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Sick-Baby Nursery
• Experience Level: Minimum 1 year of true LDRP experience acceptable; first-time travel nurses welcome
• Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (Advanced FHM required in Nevada to administer Cytotec)
  • STABLE certification preferred

Additional Information

• Housing: Candidates should research housing options prior to submission; leads available
• Float Requirements: May be asked to assist in other departments (Medical-Surgical, ER, Long-Term Care) as sitter or helping hands during low OB census; must return to unit for laboring patients
• Scrub Color: Navy blue; hospital scrubs provided for OR during C-sections
• Call/Standby: None required
