Registered Nurse (RN) - Stepdown - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Contract
Shift: Day Shift (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM), every other week required
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours: Approximately 11 hours per day, 34.5 hours per week


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to a designated group of patients using nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care based on professional practice models and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care teams.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered care activities such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perception of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety and quality.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure safety.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management for patient care.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Use resources cost-effectively.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Demonstrate professional communication and ethical decision-making.
  • Encourage lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
  • Participate in shared decision-making through committees and councils.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Minimum 2 years of ventilator (vent) experience
  • Minimum 2 years of ventricular assist device (VAD) experience
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Experience in cardiology and telemetry
  • Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience
