Registered Nurse - Child Adolescent Psychiatric (Contract)

Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 14 weeks
Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM, every other weekend
Hours: Approximately 34.5 hours per week (3x12-hour shifts with weekends required)
Unit Census: Average 20 patients, 29 beds
Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to child and adolescent psychiatric patients using evidence-based practice and nursing theory. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Support patients and families through education, therapeutic relationships, and transition planning.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to escalate safety hazards.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
  • Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
  • Use patient-focused and cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with empathy and respect.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils, committees, and unit initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
  • Minimum 2 years of psychiatric nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Experience working with geriatric patients.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).
  • SEL and PMCS certifications required.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • For travel positions, a minimum of 1 year of prior travel nursing experience is required (not required for Per Diem positions).

Additional Information

  • Unit staffing guideline is 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio.
  • Schedule includes 3 twelve-hour shifts with weekends required, averaging 34.5 hours per week.
  • Excellent organizational skills are essential.
  • Shift hours are from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, every other weekend.
