Unit Information

• Unit: Medical-Surgical Specialty (4th and 5th Floors)
• Number of Beds: 60
• Number of Staff: 50
• Shift Staffing:

  • Day Shift: 1 Charge Nurse per floor, RNs, LVNs, PCTs, and unit secretary (when available)
  • Night Shift: 1 Charge Nurse per floor, RNs, LVNs, PCTs
• Patient Ratios:

  • 4th Floor: 5:1
  • 5th Floor: 6:1
• Equipment Used: Remote telemetry, capnography, Alaris IV pumps, glucometers, dynamaps
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Alterra (Allscripts)

Required Skills and Experience

• Must Have:

  • Telemetry experience
  • Medical-Surgical experience
• Preferred:

  • Cardiac recognition
  • IV starts
  • Time management

Typical Procedures on Unit

• Abdominal surgeries: cholecystectomy, appendectomy, colectomy, diagnostic procedures, paracentesis, thoracentesis
• Cardiac procedures: heart catheterizations, run offs
• Orthopedic surgeries: gastric sleeves, total hip, knee and shoulder replacements, ortho trauma repairs (fractures)

Certifications Required

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Floating and Additional Duties

• Mandatory float as needed to:

  • Inpatient rehab
  • Emergency Department (ED)
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Assignments will not exceed skill level or scope of practice

Work Environment and Policies

• Dress Code: Currently black scrubs; transitioning to Medical City Blue scrubs
• Weekend Shifts: Required
• On Call: None
