Job Description
Seeking experienced Labor & Delivery nurses for night shifts at a Critical Access Hospital in Northern Nevada. The role involves working in the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit. Nurses will care for low-risk labor patients, postpartum couplets, and sick-baby nursery cases, with occasional stabilization and transfer of high-risk patients.
Unit Details
- 4 LDRP beds, 2 postpartum beds, 1 exam room convertible to LDRP
- Approximately 20 births per month (~200 per year)
- Staff 2 nurses per shift, following AWHONN staffing guidelines
- No designated triage area; triage done in all rooms
- OR team handles C-sections; OB nurse receives the baby
- No charge nurse on unit; team approach with support from ER/ICU charge nurse if needed
- OB on call with ~30-minute response time; no neonatologist on site
- High acuity babies stabilized and transferred (transfer can take ~3 hours)
- Anesthesia on call with quick response (~20 minutes)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (required in Nevada to administer Cytotec)
- STABLE certification preferred
Experience Requirements
- Must have LDRP experience with ability to function in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Sick-Baby Nursery
- Minimum 1 year of true LDRP experience required
- First-time travel nurses are acceptable
Clinical Responsibilities
- Care for low-risk labor patients, postpartum couplets, and well nursery babies
- Comfortable caring for sick babies prior to transport
- Manage IV drips using infusion devices (common drips: Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, antibiotics)
- Read and interpret electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) strips; identify major and life-threatening rhythms
- Participate in a team approach to patient care without a dedicated charge nurse on the unit
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (start time 7:00-7:30 PM) with a 30-minute lunch
- Modified self-scheduling with flexibility requested to cover staffing gaps
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday rotation participation may be required
- No call or standby requirements
- Possible floating to other departments (Medical-Surgical, ER, Long-Term Care) as needed
- Scrubs: Navy blue; hospital scrubs provided for OR cases
Orientation
- 1 day general orientation plus 1-2 shifts on unit with a preceptor
- Orientation shift scheduled during assigned shift
Additional Information
- Nurses should be prepared to assist with stocking and department tasks during low census
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes T-pieces for PPV and Vapotherm for high flow
- Telemetry monitoring done by RNs; MDs review remotely
