Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including days and nights)
Hours: 36 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)
Number of Beds: 27-28
Patient Population: Adults with oncology and trauma diagnoses
Job Description
- Provide nursing care on a mixed PCU/Med Surg/Oncology unit with a focus on oncology and trauma patients.
- Float within the same level of care to Med Surg and PCU units as needed.
- Common patient diagnoses include oncology and trauma cases.
- Nurses are expected to titrate drips such as insulin (occasionally) and cardizem.
- Use of specialty equipment including ventilators and hemodynamic monitoring devices (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000), ICP monitoring (training provided).
- Use of EPIC electronic medical record system and Alaris IV pumps.
- Patient care includes chemotherapy administration (chemo certification preferred but not required).
- Emphasis on patient experience with hourly rounding and culturally sensitive care.
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
- PCU Days: 1 RN to 4 patients
- Med Surg Days: 1 RN to 5 patients
- Nights: 1 RN to 5-6 patients
Orientation & Training
- 2 days of orientation provided.
- Pass/fail exam during orientation requiring 90% to continue. Open book with resources provided.
Required Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Oncology certification preferred (ONS/ONCC) but not required
- Competency or training in ventilator and hemodynamic monitoring equipment
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in PCU, Med Surg, or Oncology.
- Experience as a charge nurse requires at least 1 year of experience.
- First-time travel nurses are welcome (prior travel experience not required).
Additional Information
- Scrubs color: Navy Blue
- Nursing assistant support available
- Charge nurse present on unit
- Additional support staff includes PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, and dietician
- Artificial nails are prohibited for patient care staff.
- Driver’s license required to verify distance from facility (radius rule applies).
- Self-scheduling available.
