Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery
Location: Monterey, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery RN for a coastal hospital’s LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) unit. This role requires acute care experience in labor and delivery as well as mother-baby postpartum care. The nurse will be responsible for circulating in the OR and may scrub (scrubbing required for night shift). EPIC electronic medical record experience is mandatory.
Required Qualifications
- Current California RN license
- Minimum 3 years of Labor and Delivery experience (beyond initial training)
- Minimum 3 prior travel assignments (prior travel experience required)
- Advanced certifications:
- Advanced AWHONN (Advanced Fetal Monitoring)
- Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – must be advanced level
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Comfortable with EPIC charting system
- Experience circulating in the OR; scrubbing is a bonus (required for night shift)
- Experience with LDRP or mother-baby couplet care (MBC) – must be detailed on resume
- Ability to titrate drips such as magnesium, pitocin, and insulin
- Strong skills in all areas of LDRP and flexibility to float between Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, PACU (recovering mothers), OR circulation, and mother-baby overflow units
- Ability to work independently with limited staff, confident, professional, and quick decision-making skills
- Must be able to manage the entire labor process without midwives or midlevel providers
- High customer service expectations from patient population
Unit Information
- 13 beds covering Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Recovery
- Approximately 100-105 births per month
- Level 1 birthing center (32 weeks gestation and greater)
- Twin deliveries included; high-risk patients are transferred out
- AWHONN staffing ratio guidelines followed
- No cardiac telemetry on unit
- Neonatologist available on call with 30-minute response time; OB hospitalist available in-house ~85% of the time
- No nurse aides or surgical techs on unit
- Charge nurse/house supervisor present, usually not taking patient assignments
- No block scheduling; travelers fill in scheduling gaps
- 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Weekend and holiday availability required
- May be placed on call for low census shifts; some shifts may be cancelled per contract terms
Orientation & Additional Details
- Unit-specific orientation: 3 shifts
- Scrub color and dress code provided
- Smoke-free facility; negative nicotine/cotinine drug screen required
- Night shift requires scrubbing ability
- Travelers expected to be a resource for newer nurses on night shift
- Must be comfortable switching between Labor & Delivery and Postpartum assignments
- Must be willing to float to multiple related areas as needed
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
- No blocked scheduling; travelers fill in gaps
- Weekend and holiday work expected
- May be required to float to L&D, Postpartum, PACU (recovering mothers), OR circulation, and mother-baby overflow units
- No post-op gynecology on postpartum side
- May be assigned sitter duties if needed
This position is ideal for an experienced Labor and Delivery RN with strong clinical skills, prior travel experience, and comfort working independently in a busy LDRP environment.
