ICU Registered Nurse (RN) - Connecticut

Job Details

• Location: Bristol, Connecticut
• Assignment Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Days (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM), 36 hours per week
• Unit: 14-bed mixed ICU (includes ICU, stepdown, and med-surg overflow patients)
• Patient Ratios:

  • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
  • Overflow med-surg/tele: 1:3 to 1:4
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Rotate with permanent staff
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: May float to med-surg or ER as helping hands only

Unit Environment

• Small hospital ICU with a mix of patient acuity; not all patients are on drips or intubated.
• Common patient diagnoses include:

  • MICU cases such as alcohol-related issues, suicide attempts, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), sepsis, respiratory conditions, carotid endarterectomy recovery, urology, post-surgical care, abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), arterial lines (A-lines), minor strokes without intervention.
• No head bleeds, high neuro or cardiac cases, and no cath lab on site.
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7; intensivist on call evenings and nights.
• Respiratory therapists available 24/7 with various ventilator equipment.
• Nurses are required to read and interpret cardiac monitor strips.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years ICU nursing experience (higher experience requirement takes precedence)
• Current ACLS and BLS certifications required
• COVID-19 vaccination required
• RN licensure required; temporary permit applicants considered
• Ability to titrate all common ICU drips

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation: 2-3 days on ICU plus orientation for potential float units
• Shift length: 12-hour shifts (7 AM – 7 PM)
• Self-scheduling allowed but finalized by manager; block scheduling possible but not guaranteed

Additional Information

• Nurse aids available (1 CNA per shift)
• Charge nurse coverage: designated charge nurse from 3:30 PM to 7 PM; manager present M-F until 3:30 PM
• Dress code: Navy scrubs
• Work culture emphasizes a drama-free, respectful environment with diverse patient populations

Prior Travel Experience

• Preferred but not required
