Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - MedSurg/Oncology

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care with orthopedic and medical surgical experience.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment requiring flexibility, resilience, and strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform team nursing and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Foster a collaborative nursing environment and demonstrate ongoing professional development.
  • Care primarily for medical/surgical patients with a specialty in post-operative cancer interventions (e.g., prostatectomy, mastectomy).
  • Chemotherapy administration is not required for travelers due to competency requirements.

Unit Details

  • Unit Type: Med/Surg Oncology
  • Number of Beds: 21
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • Charge Nurse/House Supervisor role available
  • Nurse Aids available sometimes (ratio 1:15 depending on sitter needs)
  • Central monitoring with RNs responsible for noticing changes
  • Common drips titrated by RNs: heparin, lidocaine, TPN gtt
  • Shifts: 3 shifts of 12 hours (06:30 - 19:00)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotating holidays required
  • Call or Standby: None
  • Floating: Rare, only to other medical/surgical units if needed
  • Dress Code: Navy scrubs
  • Unit-specific orientation provided

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license for Nebraska
  • BLS (AHA) certification required
  • Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, based on skills learned)
  • Good communication skills, accurate documentation, timeliness, and patient-centered care required
  • Ability to titrate drips as listed above
  • Driver’s license required at submittal
  • Must comply with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas

Experience Requirements

  • Orthopedic and medical surgical nursing experience required
  • Oncology certification is a plus but not required
  • Higher years of specialty experience not explicitly stated; assume minimum experience consistent with MedSurg/Oncology RN roles
