Position Details

• Specialty: Medical Surgical-ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (6:00 PM - 6:30 AM)
• Schedule:

  • Self-scheduling with guidelines
  • 4-week blocks posted two weeks in advance
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Holiday requirement: One major and one minor holiday per season
  • Call/Standby: Nurses or CNAs may be placed on call if census permits (extra shift or voluntary)

Experience & Certifications

• Required Specialty Experience: ICU experience required; experience in a similar size facility preferred
• Pediatric experience: Preferred but not required
• Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
• Required Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) preferred

Unit & Patient Information

• Unit Size:

  • 16 Medical/Surgical beds
  • 3 ICU beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Medical/Surgical: 1:4-6 (depending on acuity)
  • ICU: 1:1-3 (depending on acuity)
  • Mixed patient assignments possible (ICU, Med-Surg Telemetry, Swing Bed)
• Common Diagnoses:

  • DKA, Sepsis, Alcohol Withdrawal, Hyper/Hypotension
  • CHF or COPD exacerbation
  • Basic surgical patients, comfort care patients
  • Pediatric and skilled/acute rehab (Swing Bed) patients

Clinical Responsibilities

• RNs are required to titrate drips (blood pressure meds, insulin, cardiac meds, comfort care meds like morphine/versed, heparin on Med-Surg Tele side)
• Nurses manage their own cardiac patients; no dedicated monitor techs
• Respiratory Therapy (RT) available for respiratory treatments and equipment management; RNs may assist during emergencies
• Floating may include Med/Surg, ICU, LTC, ER, and OB units

Staffing & Support

• Charge nurse oversees Med/Surg and ICU areas and takes patient assignments
• ER charge nurse available as a resource
• Nurse aides staffed with either a CNA and unit clerk or 2 CNAs
• Respiratory therapists on site (2 on days, 1 on nights)
• Hospitalists on campus 24/7 (3 hospitalists rotating weekly)
• Case manager available Monday-Friday

Orientation & Dress Code

• Orientation: 1 day general + 1-2 days unit-specific with preceptor
• Scrub colors:

  • RNs: Navy Blue
  • CNAs: Maroon or Black
