Job Summary

As a Telemetry Technician, you will be a key member of the clinical care team responsible for monitoring patients’ heart rates, rhythms, and detecting arrhythmias. You will observe cardiac monitors, interpret EKG strips, and communicate changes to nurses and physicians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Obtain baseline EKG strips each shift on all monitored patients
  • Verify and adjust alarm parameters and levels
  • Continuously observe cardiac monitors for abnormalities
  • Identify and report changes in cardiac rhythm to nursing and medical staff
  • Measure, interpret, and document heart rhythms in patient records
  • Run EKG strips every shift and provide initial interpretations including rate, rhythm, PR, QRS, QT, ST segment, and T wave changes
  • Initiate and discontinue monitoring equipment during patient admission, transfer, and discharge
  • Troubleshoot monitoring equipment and coordinate with biomedical staff as needed
  • Apply and remove telemetry and monitoring equipment
  • Communicate patient information accurately and timely to healthcare team members
  • Serve as a resource for training and troubleshooting in telemetry and clinical areas
  • Follow policies related to transport and monitoring of patients
  • Monitor alarms and take appropriate actions
  • Document and log patients on cardiac monitors each shift and upon admission
  • Notify charge nurse of patient refusals or monitor downtime and document accordingly
  • Print rhythm strips every three hours for patient charts
  • Provide shift handoff reports
  • Prioritize and organize work assignments based on changing situations
  • Maintain and organize telemetry equipment
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information
  • Collaborate effectively with nursing and clinical staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Must successfully complete the required EKG course
