ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Boone, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Schedule: 2 weekends per month required
  • Float Requirement: Must float between ICU, Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), and Medical-Surgical units based on patient volume
  • Patient Ratio: ICU patient ratio typically 1:2, may vary when floating
  • Patient Population: Primarily adult ICU patients; occasional pediatric patients may be encountered and nurse must be comfortable caring for them
  • Uniform: All white or all navy scrubs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification
  • Experience with ventilators (vent)
  • Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) experience
  • Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) nursing experience
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
  • Valid Driver's License

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Must reside more than 40 miles from the facility (address verification via driver’s license required)
  • Provide current NURSYS report and Qualivis cover sheet with all Return to Office (RTO) documentation
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG screenings required and must be updated annually
  • Drug screening: 10-panel including marijuana, completed within 90 days prior to start and updated annually
  • Physical exam and immunizations/vaccinations must be current and compliant with facility policies (see below)
  • Photo for badge: Passport-style, clear, front-facing, neutral background, JPEG format

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Negative TB test (2-step PPD, QuantiFERON Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year, updated annually
  • Immunity or vaccination documentation required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella (chickenpox)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually during flu season (Oct 1 – Apr 30)
  • Drug testing and physical exam must be current and compliant with facility standards

Additional Notes

  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and competency exams, including medication/pharmacology competency
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Performance evaluations required if previously worked with the agency for over 1 year
  • Candidate must carry government-issued photo ID during hours of service

This position requires a highly skilled ICU RN comfortable with critical care patients, flexible with floating assignments, and compliant with rigorous credentialing and health requirements.
